Working near Schools

Work on or near occupied Schools pose additional safety, health and welfare risks to both workers and the school staff, children, parents and visitors.

Its that time of year again when the children go back to school for a new year.

Most schools themselves will carry out "summer works" during the holiday period when they can carry out the work without risk of injury to school children and staff.

However, some works may overlap with the term and in this case, it is vital to take extra precautions and implement very good control measures to protect everyone at risk from the works.

Good communication and co-operation is required between the Contractor and the Schools Board of Management.

Drop off and pick up times are most busy with a mixture of Pedestrians, Cyclists, Buses and Cars pulling up and parking at the School.

It may be best to try and cease works temporarily at these busy times if there is a very high risk of injury posed, this would be the case if carrying out roadworks at the school entrance gates.

It is vital to have the following in place:

  1. Safety & Health Plan
  2. Risk Assessment specific to the works being carried out
  3. Traffic management plan
  4. Use of competent workers
  5. Use of equipment, machinery and plant in good working order and certified.
